Smitty’s Fireplace Shop opened in 1970 by LE and Juanita Smith. In business for over 50 years, this family-owned Montana business has been passed down generations, from LE and Juanita to their children Leland and Sharon. Now Leland and Sharon’s kids Robyn and Shawn, are working there and the 4th generation, Robyn and Dean’s kids Shelby and Carson VanHemelryck, are also involved. We are proud to be a small business serving the great community of Helena.
Meet our Staff!
Shawn Smith, President, has worked at Smitty’s since 1980. He specializes in sales, ordering, and oversees daily operations. Shawn was born and raised in Helena and has two amazing children, Bryson and Brittany Smith. Some of Shawn’s hobbies include golfing, hunting, and riding four wheelers in the mountains.
Dean VanHemelryck, Vice President, has worked at Smitty’s since 1994. Dean runs the service department and also specializes in sales. He was born in Hysham and moved to Helena after college. Dean is married to Robyn, who also works at Smitty’s, and together have three great children: Kylee, Shelby, and Carson. Some of Dean’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, and camping.
Robyn VanHemelryck, Secretary/Treasurer, has worked at Smitty’s since 1996. She was born and raised in Helena. Robyn is married to Dean and they have three amazing kids: Kylee, Shelby, and Carson. Robyn loves camping and spending time with her family. She grew up around Smitty’s as a little girl and rode her tricycle around playing “store”.
Johno McMaster has worked at Smitty’s since 2003 and specializes in the sales department. He was born and raised in Helena. Johno has two great children, Shaun and Shanon. Some of his hobbies include yard maintenance and model railroads. Johno says, “I love working at Smitty’s. Best employer ever!”.
Shaun McMaster has worked at Smitty’s since 2015 and specializes in the sales department. He was born and raised in Helena. Some of Shaun’s hobbies include fishing and hiking. Shaun is lucky enough to not only work with his father, Johno, but also share an office with him! They are a great duo together.
Terry Wagner has worked at Smitty’s since 2019 and specializes in the service department. He was born in Dixon, Illinois and moved to Montana in 2007. Terry is married to Kirsten and they have two beautiful daughters, Lily and Kaylin. Some of his hobbies include billiards and spending time with his family. Terry is also a U.S Army Veteran. We thank you for your service!
DJ Hinman has worked at Smitty’s since 2019. He provides excellent customer service in our masonry yard and keeps both the yard and warehouse clean and organized. DJ also has been helping out in the service department and learning what that entails. He was born in Billings and has lived in Helena since 2016. DJ’s hobbies include hunting and fishing.
Shelby VanHemelryck has worked at Smitty’s since 2020. Shelby is the daughter of Dean and Robyn and was born and raised in Helena. She works in accounts receivable/accounts payable as well as the sales department. Shelby’s passion is basketball and she is the freshman girls’ basketball coach at Capital High School. She also helps coach the Capital High School softball team
Carson VanHemelryck has worked at Smitty’s full time since summer 2021 after graduating from Capital High School. He was born and raised in Helena and is the son of Dean and Robyn. Carson loads materials for our contractors, customers, and freight trucks. He also maintains cleanliness in our yard and warehouse. Some of his hobbies include hunting, camping, and riding four wheelers.
